Trion Worlds and CJ E&M Games to present RIFT to Korea
by posted Apr 19,2011 at 06:04

The world’s best MMORPG RIFT will come to South Korea as the agreement between Trion Worlds and CJ E&M Games Corp was reached lately, according to the press release.

Meanwhile, rumors said RIFT will also be published in China, and chances are NETEase has already secured the rights to exclusively distribute RIFT in China.

Below is the Press release:

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – April 19, 2011 – Trion Worlds, a global developer and publisher of premium online games, announced today it has signed a multi-year agreement with Korean developer and publisher CJ E&M Games, the online developer and publisher in CJ Group, to exclusively publish a localized version of the recently released MMORPG Rift™ in Korean.

“We take the Korean market very seriously as it is driven by innovation and growth in the online gaming space,” said Lars Buttler, CEO, Trion Worlds. “By working with CJ E&M we are able to bring deep, immersive online gaming experiences to the east, and continue delivering quality games to gamers worldwide.”

“We are very happy to introduce the premium MMO Rift to Korean gamers, as it delivers a truly dynamic experience which I am personally enjoying very much, and I am confident Korean gamers will also enjoy this great title,” said Whon Namkoong, Head of Games Business, CJ E&M.

The agreement comes hot on the heels of NPD’s March Report which lists Rift as the month’s top-selling PC game at retail in North America. While digital sales have significantly outpaced retail sales, the report details a strong retail performance for Trion’s first premium online title.

Free online Games Continue to Grow in the form of MMORPG
by posted Apr 2,2011 at 09:04

When MMORPG’s first hit the scene way back in the early 1990’s, the increased cost associated with running an online game, from server maintenance to game updates, presented developers with a new challenge. How could they increase their revenue to overcome the added expenses?

From this dilemma, the subscription model was born. Gamers would not only have to purchase the game, they would then have to pay a fee for continued access to the servers to actually play the game. And in fact, one of the very first MMORPG’s, NeverWinter Nights, used a subscription model that was quite literal in its execution, charging gamers per every hour spent slaying beasts. We can thank the Gods of (insert random MMO fantasy world ruled over by a pantheon of Gods, which probably constitutes most) that THAT model quickly went the way of Final Fantasy XIV’s original staff members.

As the genre continued to grow, and more and more games all using subscription models hit the market, it became apparent that something was going to have to give. The trouble with this model was that it bred players who were wholly devoted to just one game. Many games were struggling to find new paying players or pull them from the other subscription based games, and this only intensified after World of Warcraft’s release and subsequent dominance of the subscription based market.

It was around this time that Free to Play Games first started appearing, many of them coming from Asia. It’s safe to say that early impressions of these games weren’t overly positive for the most part, and the payment model developed a poor reputation as a result, with free to play games being seen as inferior in quality to most pay to play offerings.

Yet despite this, a funny thing happened; free to play online games were pulling in huge amounts of players, and even better for developers, they were actually making money. You see, contrary to what some people believed, gamers WERE in fact willing to spend money on in-game items to help them level faster, or new duds to make them look stylish in advance of their next raid.

As a result, more and more developers entered the free to play market (Dungeons & Dragons Online, The Lord of the Rings Online, EverQuest II Extended, Alganon, APB, Champions Online and much more), which led to a veritable flood of new offerings hitting in recent years. The flood of new titles put even greater pressure on those clinging to the old subscription model, forcing some of them to shut down altogether or switch from subscription-based to free-to-play.

This migration to free to play all but ensures that this payment model will thrive in the coming years, and with the increased competition in this space, should also ensure that the quality of new releases continues to grow with it. We can already see the evidence of this in many of the most recent free to play offerings such as Runes of Magic, League of Legends, Vindictus, Need for Speed World, Battlefield Play4Free, and much more.

What we’re seeing now are subscription-based quality games being released free to play, and this trend will only continue. It’s not really a surprise that this is now the case; with developers now confident they can make money and develop a sustainable revenue stream for the long term, they’re able to commit more resources to new free to play projects, and the quality of these games is increasing as a result. This whole trend will only continue to make it that much more difficult for subscription based games to find loyal, paying customers.

Of course, one of the great benefits to gamers with the free to play model is the ease with which they can test out and jump between different games, all without having to worry about fees. You can read game reviews and lists of game features until you’re blue in the face, but until you’ve actually tested out a game for a decent amount of time yourself, you really don’t know for certain whether it will be up your alley or not.

While many subscription based games do have free trials, you often have to jump through hoops to gain access to them, and then the limited nature of the trials forces you to cram large gaming sessions into a short amount of time if you hope to be able to make an accurate judgment on the game before the trial expires.

Free to play games also allow you to freely return to former stomping grounds and hook up with old adventuring buddies whenever you want. You don’t have to feel obligated to just one game because of a subscription fee that you want to get the most out of, and you don’t have to cling to playing that game until the bitter end, knowing that once you drop it, you’ll likely be dropping it for good. Instead you’ll be free to jump around and play whichever games you want, whenever you want.

So what are you waiting for? A whole host of exciting new worlds are out there waiting to be explored, with new friends to meet, new guilds to join, new battles to be fought, and new loot to be found. Get out there and enjoy the journey. The free journey.

Top 10 free MMOFPS in 2011
by posted Apr 2,2011 at 09:04

For a sub-genre of MMO’s that hasn’t been around all that long, there are an absolute slew of free to play MMOFPS, MMOTPS and multiplayer online shooter games on the market. It’s not surprising really; this genre is like the perfect melding of two seemingly disparate things. The relentless action and excitement of shooters, with the joy of social features and item collecting found in RPG’s. With so many new entries out there, we figured we’d help you sort through them all with this list of the Top 10 Free Shooters to Play in 2011.

10. MicroVolts

MicroVolts is a free to play MMOTPS and stands out from the crowded shooter lineup with a quirky premise, where you control different toys as they battle throughout various environments. The shooting action is solid with the same graphic style as the popular shooter Team Fortress 2, though there isn’t a ton of depth yet as far as weapons and upgrading goes. Not for the core shooting fan, but fans looking for something different, or casual gamers may want to give it a look.

9. CrimeCraft

CrimeCraft is a interesting fusion of typical RPG gameplay with shooting mechanics, as the game features numerous NPC’s, quests, and an open world for gamers to run around in (though quests and many areas are actually instanced). CrimeCraft is a good looking game with solid mechanics, and has received numerous updates since its release. Check it out for something different than the typical shooters.

8. GunZ: The Duel

GunZ is like a freakishly fun combination of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Call of Duty. This free to play 3rd person shooter (MMOTPS) is about more than just shooting, as players can pull off all sorts of insane stunts like running up walls and deflecting bullets with swords. Not the best looking game out there, and the gameplay can take some getting used to, but if you want to do more than just shoot things, this game offers that.

7. Project Blackout

Project Blackout is a 3D free to play MMOFPS, not the best looking shooter on the maker, but the lower system resources are ideally suited to those gamers with less powerful computers. Solid, if unspectacular shooting action abounds, and the game does offer a frenetic pace based more on twitch reflexes than absolute precision. Worth a look if you’re an action junkie.

6. Cross Fire

A fast-paced game, Cross Fire urges you to run and gun, not hide and snipe, thanks to its combo system that rewards you for stringing together kills. Cross Fire also stands out for its boatload of different maps, which puts most other games to shame. There’s also an advanced ranking system and stats system so you can monitor your progress and skills.

5. Genesis A.D.

This free to play sci-fi MMOFPS shooter has drawn comparison to the mighty Halo, and it’s not hard to see why. The game is gorgeous, the environments are intricately detailed, and the gameplay is fast and accessible. There are several great game modes such as blaster, where only melee weapons are permitted, and escape. If you were one of the millions who liked Halo, you’ll probably like this as well.

4. S4 League

This anime-inspired 3D MMOTPS is quite different from everything else out there, featuring standard shooting modes like deathmatch, to go with its own unique, team-based modes. There’s also a good deal of character and equipment customization.

3. Battlefield Heroes

Battlefield Heroes is a charming 3D free to play cel-shaded MMOTPS game. It features several modes, vehicles, and weapons to master, and skills to unlock. Battlefield Heroes has a great sense of humor that runs through the entire game and adds to its charm. Those looking for solid shooting action in a funny and stylish package should enter this battlefield.

2. Combat Arms

One of the most popular free to play FPS game for a reason; Combat Arms features great balance, a ton of content, and is plain fun to play. There’s tons of equipment customizing, though equipment comes with the slightly annoying wrinkle that it’s timed and does not last forever.

1. Alliance of Valiant Arms

The current king of free to play online shooters. This baby offers up tons of awesome game modes, near-limitless customization, and some of the tightest shooting gameplay to be found online. It’s good looking and stable, thanks to the Unreal Engine powering its thirst for blood, and runs nearly lag free. If you can only play one shooter this year, this is the one.

This impressive list of free shooters stands to grow even larger throughout the year, and several new MMOFPS and MMOTPS games are in development. Whether they can top any of the games on this list remains to be seen, but they’ll have their hands full. Still, we can’t wait to see where this genre takes us in 2011 and beyond.

*This page will be updated from time to time so don´t forget to share your top 10!
