It is undoubtedly that western players have experienced fat lots of games based on Greek and Roman myths, but, they certainly never saw a game based on Chinese legends. Now comes the opportunity to have a look at the Chinese legend provided by browser MMORPG Grand Epic.

As a Chinese player, I play the game with a lot of expectations, hoping to see a wonderful game. But I am very sorry to say that, this game might disappoint you because it neither presents the legend clearly, nor does provide a satisfactory gameplay. The most deadly flaw of the game is its design of the missions. Grand Epic bases its story on the strife between Chiyou and the Yellow Emperor who later becomes the ancestors of Chinese. The real legend goes to the ending that Chiyou is defeated, while the Yan Emperor starts a new history. Nevertheless, the legend in the game will take you to nowhere because the legend contributes little to the progression of the game. There are many missions in the game. But they are independent individually, having little connection with the legend. The loose interrelationship among each mission will soon quench your any interest in the game.

In the promotion of Grand Epic, many features have been highlighted as unprecedented, however, few of these features are attractive to players. For example, a 2.5D graphic is considered a revolution in browser games. But to me, a 2.5D graphic is not something worth boasting. It is just a pseudo 3D that only magnifies the limited ability on graphic of the developer.

One more “feature” that embarrasses me is its design of mounts. It is said that the various mounts enable players to move faster and enhance their attacking and defending ability. More interestingly, they can be shared by different players. But in my experience, they are merely taxies and never do anything to my leveling up.

Besides, Grand Epic allows players to enhance their reaction to attacks through the setting of shortcut keys. But a quick response to attacks can only be achieved after a series of practice, because players need a long of practice to remember that many shortcut keys.

Despite of its many “features”, it does possess something interesting, for example, the pets and monsters in the game are cute and useful. You should not miss them. Pets can help in the battles and contribute a lot to your upgrades. What’s more, they can be reared to specialize in certain fights. Monsters are something annoying in other games, but never in Grand Epic. You will be eager to discover a monster and conquer it, since in that way, you achieve its ability to diversify yours.
