Top 10 free MMOFPS in 2011
by posted Apr 2,2011

For a sub-genre of MMO’s that hasn’t been around all that long, there are an absolute slew of free to play MMOFPS, MMOTPS and multiplayer online shooter games on the market. It’s not surprising really; this genre is like the perfect melding of two seemingly disparate things. The relentless action and excitement of shooters, with the joy of social features and item collecting found in RPG’s. With so many new entries out there, we figured we’d help you sort through them all with this list of the Top 10 Free Shooters to Play in 2011.

10. MicroVolts

MicroVolts is a free to play MMOTPS and stands out from the crowded shooter lineup with a quirky premise, where you control different toys as they battle throughout various environments. The shooting action is solid with the same graphic style as the popular shooter Team Fortress 2, though there isn’t a ton of depth yet as far as weapons and upgrading goes. Not for the core shooting fan, but fans looking for something different, or casual gamers may want to give it a look.

9. CrimeCraft

CrimeCraft is a interesting fusion of typical RPG gameplay with shooting mechanics, as the game features numerous NPC’s, quests, and an open world for gamers to run around in (though quests and many areas are actually instanced). CrimeCraft is a good looking game with solid mechanics, and has received numerous updates since its release. Check it out for something different than the typical shooters.

8. GunZ: The Duel

GunZ is like a freakishly fun combination of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Call of Duty. This free to play 3rd person shooter (MMOTPS) is about more than just shooting, as players can pull off all sorts of insane stunts like running up walls and deflecting bullets with swords. Not the best looking game out there, and the gameplay can take some getting used to, but if you want to do more than just shoot things, this game offers that.

7. Project Blackout

Project Blackout is a 3D free to play MMOFPS, not the best looking shooter on the maker, but the lower system resources are ideally suited to those gamers with less powerful computers. Solid, if unspectacular shooting action abounds, and the game does offer a frenetic pace based more on twitch reflexes than absolute precision. Worth a look if you’re an action junkie.

6. Cross Fire

A fast-paced game, Cross Fire urges you to run and gun, not hide and snipe, thanks to its combo system that rewards you for stringing together kills. Cross Fire also stands out for its boatload of different maps, which puts most other games to shame. There’s also an advanced ranking system and stats system so you can monitor your progress and skills.

5. Genesis A.D.

This free to play sci-fi MMOFPS shooter has drawn comparison to the mighty Halo, and it’s not hard to see why. The game is gorgeous, the environments are intricately detailed, and the gameplay is fast and accessible. There are several great game modes such as blaster, where only melee weapons are permitted, and escape. If you were one of the millions who liked Halo, you’ll probably like this as well.

4. S4 League

This anime-inspired 3D MMOTPS is quite different from everything else out there, featuring standard shooting modes like deathmatch, to go with its own unique, team-based modes. There’s also a good deal of character and equipment customization.

3. Battlefield Heroes

Battlefield Heroes is a charming 3D free to play cel-shaded MMOTPS game. It features several modes, vehicles, and weapons to master, and skills to unlock. Battlefield Heroes has a great sense of humor that runs through the entire game and adds to its charm. Those looking for solid shooting action in a funny and stylish package should enter this battlefield.

2. Combat Arms

One of the most popular free to play FPS game for a reason; Combat Arms features great balance, a ton of content, and is plain fun to play. There’s tons of equipment customizing, though equipment comes with the slightly annoying wrinkle that it’s timed and does not last forever.

1. Alliance of Valiant Arms

The current king of free to play online shooters. This baby offers up tons of awesome game modes, near-limitless customization, and some of the tightest shooting gameplay to be found online. It’s good looking and stable, thanks to the Unreal Engine powering its thirst for blood, and runs nearly lag free. If you can only play one shooter this year, this is the one.

This impressive list of free shooters stands to grow even larger throughout the year, and several new MMOFPS and MMOTPS games are in development. Whether they can top any of the games on this list remains to be seen, but they’ll have their hands full. Still, we can’t wait to see where this genre takes us in 2011 and beyond.
