Martial Arts Themed MMORPGs
by posted Mar 24,2011 at 02:03

Guns are for pansies. I’m sure Bruce Lee would have echoed that sentiment as he was snapping thugs’ necks with lightning fast kicks and one-inch punching them to kingdom come. Ok, so maybe Indiana Jones had a slight advantage when he drew his pistol against that sword-wielding show-off, but he was still a fan of a good left hook. Although people like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan are the poster boys of the martial art movie genre, I doubt they would ever sit down and player an MMO themed around their passion for ass-kicking, but martial arts MMOs are a good way for us regular folk to experience lots of karate chop action without actually having to nurse broken limbs.

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step” – Lao-Tzu

In December 2010, the MMO churner Perfect World Entertainment launched Legend of Martial Arts open beta, a light-hearted game with a couple of nifty features. First off, there’s in-dungeon PVP, meaning that not only do players have to take on monsters, but they have to watch their backs to see if others are sneaking up to take a quick kill. Another nice touch is the vast array of items players can get hold of that will transform them into creatures or even items. This means that you can swig some of this juice, or whatever it is, to become a dragon or a wolf, which will buff your stats, or just turn into a lamp post, which is just for a laugh I suppose.

“To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities” – Bruce Lee

Whilst Legend of Martial Arts is taking its first baby steps into the world, there’s no doubt that one of the most famous MMOs of the genre, World of Kung Fu is still chugging along nicely. Although the game is situated in a mythical land, the world does feature Chinese territories and Chinese traditional culture. When a player creates a new character they don’t choose a class, but must venture out to create their own style of Kung Fu using skill books. World of Kung Fu also has its own transformation system using cards to re-skin players into a host of cool things, including Bruce Lee in his yellow Game of Death jumpsuit.

“Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.” – Chinese proverb

If you’re looking not just for the Kung Fu look, but also some accurate martial arts then Blade Wars has you covered. Developed in China by ChangYou, Blade Wars has gone as far as recruiting a Sanchou champion to help get the moves as realistic as possible. The game boasts a whopping 398,000 actual Kung Fu moves and 99 different combat styles. Ok, maybe Bruce Lee would have enjoyed this.

There are a slew of other martial arts titles to get stuck into if you’re that way inclined, including Twelve Sky 2, Dragon Oath and Jade Dynasty, each having their own special features. Whether you want to play in a land that is completely made-up or one that parallels ancient China or other countries, there’s something out there for everyone who prefers using their fists instead of a pistol.

A new Facebook game Zuma Blitz
by posted Mar 10,2011 at 06:03

Zuma Blitz is the fast and furious one-minute version of the hit Zuma series from PopCap Games. Take on your Facebook friends as you blast balls from your fearless frog. Race the clock and destroy the chain of balls before you’re swallowed by the golden skull. Master trick shots to score big, earn extra time and leap up the leaderboard. Work your Mojo to gain experience points and unlock explosive new Powers. It’s the most ribbeting game on Facebook!

If you’ve never played Zuma Blitz, here’s what you need to know to get started. First off, let’s start with a little Zuma Blitz vocab

* Board (also called Curve): This is the design and shape of the curve which defines the path the balls travel in the game. Each board can have interesting and unique challenges. You should try different strategies and Powers to see what works best!

There are a couple of key aspects to every board:

Tunnel – this is where new balls appear

Skull – balls will travel along the curve towards the Skull

Your game can end in two ways, whichever one happens first: 1) your time runs out or 2) the balls reach the Skull.

Keep the balls from reaching the Skull by clearing as many balls as you can before time runs out!

* Time: In Zuma Blitz, you only have 1 minute to score as many points as you can. When you reach level 2, you’ll start to see Time balls appear on your curve. Each Time ball you match adds additional time to your game clock. You can use the Chrono Ball Powers to get even more time for each Time ball. Check out the What are Powers section for more information.

* Matching Balls:
As balls roll out along the curve, you need to make a match to clear them off the board. You create a match by shooting the ball in your frog’s mouth at a row of 2 or more balls that are the same color. Every match you make clears balls from your board.

Matches can have a cascading effect as well! If you shoot a single ball that causes multiple consecutive matches, that’s called a Combo. You score extra points for Combos.

Check out the image to the left. In this case, the current ball is yellow, and firing it in the direction shown by the red arrow will cause a match with the two yellow balls on the curve.

Once the yellow balls are cleared from the board, the red balls on either side will collapse together. As you can see, there are more than 3 red balls in a row, so the red balls will also be cleared off the board. Since your single shot caused more than 1 match (in this case two), you will also get a Combo bonus!

* Swapping Balls: The current ball is always the one in your frog’s mouth. The next ball is shown on your frog’s back. If you look at the example on the right, the current ball is yellow and the next ball is red.

Something you might find useful is to switch your current ball with the ball that’s coming up next. This could help you clear balls faster and more efficiently.

To swap your current and next balls, you can either hit the [Spacebar] key or you can right-click your mouse (anywhere on the screen).

* Multipliers:
Multipliers help you score more points for every match you make. There’s a maximum of x9 multiplier, which means at most, every match will earn you 9 times the amount of points you would earn normally. To increase your multiplier, you need to match the special multiplier balls that come out on the curve. When you match a multiplier, any future matches will be scored based on that new multiplier.

Action Games – Be a KungFu Master or Arena Fighter?
by posted Mar 7,2011 at 08:03

Be it Chinese kung fu novel, Japanese manga or western mythology, heroes are usually fighters with great prowess. Deep in the heart, everyone has a hero complex of one’s own: some may want to become people like James Bond to fight against evil and save the world at the last critical moment; some may wish to fight alone together with their band of brothers in a war for just and for honor; and some may simply aim at the championship of a fighting contest. Since reality deems dreams like these as unpractical, why not turn to the virtual world for satisfaction? And Action Game will be a ready choice.

Action game is characterized with the emphasis on physical challenge. And with fighting as its central component, action game sometimes also incorporate other elements like racing, shooting, puzzle, etc, which results in the occurrence of more detailed sub-classifications of this genre, namely shooting games, maze games, platform games, and rhythm action games, online games and so on and so forth.

In general, action game has relatively simple storylines, so it is easily accessible for players to take up after getting acquaintance with the operating method. Players can simply explore the development of the story by upgrading level after level with similar setting and mode. After entering higher level, the gamer-controlled avatar will possess stronger power with more advanced gears, but the opponents will be designed more threatening as well. Yet simple storylines do not mean players can win easily, for time limit is another rival in the game. If the avatar can not pass a level before the time runs out, it fails the battle even though it’s not killed by the enemy. Therefore, it is can be said that the key to win in action games is quick reaction and high coordination between eyes and hands. Such skills can be trained through playing action game for a period of time, a merit which is widely-acknowledged and highly-praised.
